Retirement Living at a Price You Can Afford!
The Waverley

About Us

Our History

Built in 1882, The Waverley is one of the mansions that made London’s Grand Avenue a showplace during the late 19th century.

Charles Goodhue named Waverley after the Bathurst Street, London home of his father, George Jervis Goodhue, a wealthy merchant and entrepreneur reputed to be London’s first millionaire. In 1893, following Charles’ death, Waverley was sold to Thomas Henry Smallman, a successful businessman, first in Imperial Oil, and then in finance (London Life). Smallman added a substantial addition to Waverley, including a 40-foot long drawingroom/ballroom, a porte-cochere and two turrets. After Smallman’s death, Waverley was inhabited by his daughter, Eleanor, and her husband Captain Claude Kyd Morgan.

The building later gained fame as the home of the Shute Institute, which pioneered the medical application of Vitamin E.

In 1987, a modern southwest wing was added to facilitate Waverley’s transformation into a retirement home. Owned and operated by Diversicare Canada Management Services, this fine example of Victorian architecture now provides a distinctive setting for seniors seeking an independent and enriched retirement lifestyle. Accommodations range from bedsitting rooms to spacious suites, with mansion suites including such amenities as original fireplaces, bay windows, balconies and private lounges.
